A Kickstarter crowdfunding campaign has begun for the unusually equipped ViewDock mini PC. Rather than being a conventional compact computer, it includes its own fold-up display, wireless charging pad and an exceptionally extensive selection of ports.

As the photographs show, the upper section of the new device houses a vertically mounted screen that folds up. This 4.5-inch display has a resolution of 480 x 854 pixels. The company does not clearly explain its intended purpose, although its promotional images show the desktop displayed on it. It could, in any case, be used for applications or tools, leaving the main monitor uncluttered.

Beside the folding screen is a wireless charging area. It supports the 15 W Qi standard. The third notable feature is the port selection, which is exceptionally generous not only for a device measuring 175 x 138 x 51 mm, but even compared with substantially larger PCs.

It offers two USB 3.1 ports, two USB 2.0 ports, HDMI, DisplayPort, USB-C 40Gbps, USB-C, a headphone socket and two RJ45 2.5GbE ports.

Hardware and Kickstarter pricing

The company provides very limited details about the platform, but it appears to be based on the Ryzen 9 6900HX. There are slots for two RAM modules and one SSD. Other specifications include Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth 5.2 and an external power supply.

During the campaign, the ViewDock starts at $640, although this price is for the Barebone kit. A fully configured version with 16 GB of RAM and a 1 TB SSD costs $890.
