Nintendo Switch Sports follows one of the best-selling games ever made, Wii Sports, but can this new instalment reach the same heights as its predecessor? In this edition of New Gameplay Today, we explore the game and consider whether it is worth buying.
Nintendo Switch Sports game modes
Join Alex Stadnik and the game’s reviewer, Jay Guisao, for a look at every returning and new mode awaiting players when the title launches on 29 April. Bowling is first up. This classic activity returns in Switch Sports and feels stronger than ever thanks to the Nintendo Switch’s more sophisticated motion controls. Once you have seen Stadnik’s ability on the lanes, the focus shifts to tennis, where Jay explains why it was his preferred mode in the original game and why it remains so effective in 2022.
Volleyball and badminton on Nintendo Switch Sports
Next comes volleyball, one of the newest additions to the Switch Sports series. It can initially feel like a lot to take in, but mastering the various movements required to bump, set and spike soon reveals how naturally it sits alongside the games you may remember playing with your family in Wii Sports.
The action then moves to the badminton court. Here, Jay discusses why this particular mode has overtaken tennis as his new favourite in Switch Sports. Rather than simply wildly waving the controller and exchanging volleys with an opponent, players must carefully monitor both their own swings and the shots being returned to them. The different trails behind the shuttlecock show its varying speeds, while anyone involved can deplete their invisible stamina bar and fall over if a rally lasts too long.
Chambara and football
Finally, we turn to chambara and football. The former is an intensely competitive contest in which players strike one another with swords until someone tumbles into the pool of humiliation (Nintendo, call me if you need me to name anything), leaving you sweaty both figuratively and literally. The latter resembles Rocket League, requiring players to remain aware of their stamina bars and the risks they take on the pitch if they want to claim victory.
