MultiVersus New Gameplay Today
With Sora bringing DLC support for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate to a close, many people questioned what the near future held for a subgenre Nintendo was no longer leading. This year’s possible response is MultiVersus, and this instalment of New Gameplay Today highlights several of its major characters and new stages.
Hosts Alex Stadnik and John Carson share everything they can about their time with the closed alpha for Player First Games’ promising new release. The free-to-play platform brawler brings together some of the world’s most recognisable characters, such as Bugs Bunny, Batman, and a version of Scooby-Doo’s Shaggy who seems to have spent time with Goku. The two GI editors discuss their feelings after their opening hours with the game, as well as the icons they have enjoyed using most.
How MultiVersus differs from Super Smash Bros.
They also consider how the game measures up against the previously mentioned Super Smash Bros. and explain why certain design decisions could set it apart from the competition. Where comparable games take a different approach, MultiVersus asks players to consider team compositions alongside a range of in-game status effects. In close-quarters combat, characters can inflict freezing, burning, and weakening effects on opponents to seize an advantage, in a way that feels natural while introducing an additional level of challenge. Paired with imaginative stages and what appears to be close attention to detail, MultiVersus has delivered an exciting early impression.
