An unpleasant surprise awaits regular users of these platforms.

Operation Offsides 2026 targets 400 World Cup 2026 domains

In the middle of the 2026 World Cup, a large-scale operation has taken place. The US Department of Justice has announced the seizure of 400 domain names used to illegally stream matches from the tournament.

Known as “Operation Offsides 2026”, the action was led by the National Intellectual Property Rights Coordination Center, working with the Washington HSI office and the Computer Crime and Intellectual Property Section (CCIPS), according to Torrent Freak.

US authorities worked alongside FIFA, which owns the broadcasting rights, as well as media groups beIN Media Group, NBCUniversal and Warner Bros. Organisations representing entertainment giants, including the Alliance for Creativity and Entertainment (MPA), also took part.

Domain seizures carried out across Europe and beyond

Responding to the operation, A. Tysen Duva, Assistant Attorney General in the Justice Department’s Criminal Division, said:

“We have seized hundreds of domain names used to illegally stream World Cup matches for profit, in order to dismantle international networks that capitalise on the tournament’s global popularity.”

A closer look shows that the initiative has a worldwide reach. The Department says that servers and domain names connected with the illegal streaming of World Cup matches were targeted in Peru and Bulgaria. Further takedowns were conducted in Poland, Colombia and Romania.

According to the specialist website, the operation may not yet be entirely over, with further domain seizures potentially still under way. Although such measures always deal a blow to piracy, their impact remains limited given the enormous scale of illegal match streaming.
