Amália, Portugal's first LLM

Launched this week, Amália (Automatic Multimodal Language Assistant with Artificial Intelligence) is Portugal's first LLM. Anyone expecting a ChatGPT created from scratch for Portuguese will be disappointed. That was never a realistic prospect, largely because of budget constraints.

Amália and the gov.pt portal

Its immediate role is not to interact directly with users. Instead, it is intended for integration into applications, particularly the "gov.pt" portal, making it easier for citizens to use. For now, it is an AI tool rather than a "chatbot", and it does not answer questions.

It seems to have been fashioned after Portuguese politicians, who are keen to announce things but are never available afterwards to be held accountable. Still, let us wait and see. It is better than nothing. As the real Amália would say: "Thank you! Thank you!"
