Ultra smartphones face unprofitability amid rising memory prices and weak demand

Expensive cameras, rising memory prices and weak demand make Ultra models unprofitable

Pressure is mounting on Ultra-format flagship smartphones, with several Chinese brands considering a pause in work on their next-generation devices. These handsets are not designed for high-volume sales from the outset; instead, they act more as technology showcases than as a dependable revenue stream.

Ultra smartphones prioritise camera technology

Unlike the more balanced Pro flagships and standard numbered models, Ultra smartphones concentrate almost entirely on photography. Manufacturers commit the greatest share of resources to sensors, optics and image-processing algorithms, accepting compromises in battery life, cooling and weight. This approach works well as a display of technical capability, but it is poorly suited to the mass market.

Rising component costs limit Ultra demand

Higher prices for memory and other components make the situation harder. Reducing the cost of an Ultra would undermine its central concept, while raising its price towards that of flagships such as the Samsung Galaxy S Ultra only further restricts demand. Combined with competition against the Apple iPhone in China, this creates the risk of weak sales and negligible or even negative profit, meaning losses.

As a result, brands are increasingly focusing on higher-volume models that deliver steadier income. A temporary halt to Ultra development is seen as a pragmatic measure to protect margins and avoid launching expensive devices that cannot generate a profit.

“This makes it possible to avoid producing an expensive, low-volume, loss-making ‘showpiece device’ and to protect brand value and profitability. It also explains why some brands have already paused or postponed Ultra projects. It is not that Ultra is undesirable; rather, costs, pricing and market pressure together make it temporarily unviable.”
