GeForce RTX 5070 Rapidly Climbs the Steam Charts

Steam’s newest hardware figures have delivered a modest surprise: a fresh GeForce mid-range card is rising through the rankings at unprecedented pace.

Valve’s November 2025 Steam Hardware Survey reveals that one Nvidia GPU is breaking away from the pack and disrupting a table traditionally dominated by older graphics cards. The development highlights how PC gamers are approaching upgrades, what they expect from 1080p and 1440p gaming, and the direction of the next generation of gaming PCs.

RTX 5070 quietly surges up the Steam charts

Valve’s figures show that the GeForce RTX 5070 is now Nvidia’s most widely used RTX 50-series card among Steam users. Despite arriving in a market full of “good enough” GPUs and abundant second-hand options, it has already moved ahead of the RTX 4070.

During November alone, the RTX 5070 added approximately 0.35 percentage points to its Steam market share. While that may appear limited, a survey encompassing millions of PCs means it represents a very large number of fresh installations. The card now accounts for roughly 2.23% of Steam systems, narrowly exceeding the RTX 4070 at around 2.16%.

The RTX 5070 is the first RTX 50‑series GPU to climb into the upper tier of Steam’s graphics rankings, edging out its 40‑series predecessor.

This is more than a straightforward generational replacement. Steam’s leading rankings generally move gradually, as most gamers keep their graphics cards for several years. A new generation making such an impact before the end of the year indicates that the RTX 5070 occupies a particular sweet spot: convincing performance, ray tracing that feels practical, and pricing that does not seem wholly disconnected from reality.

How the RTX 5070 fits into the Steam ecosystem

Although the RTX 5070 has not yet reached the summit of Steam’s rankings, it is heading that way more quickly than many anticipated. The leading positions remain occupied by more mainstream GPUs, many of them commonly found in laptops.

Former favourites such as the GTX 1650 and RTX 3060 remain popular because of inexpensive pre-built PCs and second-hand sales. However, the RTX 5070 is gaining ground among players seeking steadier 1440p performance, smoother ray-traced visuals and enough capacity for the next few years of major PC releases.

The RTX 5070’s rapid climb suggests that, for many Steam users, this is the first “new gen” card that feels genuinely worth opening the wallet for.

Why the RTX 5070 overtakes the RTX 4070 on Steam

A price-to-performance sweet spot

Nvidia generally places its x70 models in the upper mid-range: neither inexpensive nor flagship products. The RTX 4070 occupied an uncomfortable middle position, particularly at its launch price. It was quick, but many PC gamers did not believe its improvement over older 30-series cards warranted the cost.

The RTX 5070 delivers a somewhat stronger performance uplift, particularly at 1440p with ray tracing enabled, while producing better frame rates in demanding games using intensive effects and AI-powered upscaling. During seasonal retailer promotions, it often becomes the option to “stretch your budget, but not too far”.

For these users, moving from a 20-series card to a 50-series model represents a substantial upgrade. When promotions make the price gap to an RTX 5070 less significant, an RTX 4070 can appear too modest a step. The RTX 5070 therefore becomes the longer-term choice: spend slightly more today and postpone the next upgrade cycle.

Perception and “future-proofing”

Psychology also plays a role. Many buyers prefer to choose a card one tier above the conventional mid-range in the hope that their PC will remain capable for longer. The RTX 5070 meets that expectation: it is not excessive, but it is clearly above entry level for 1440p gaming. That perception matters when buyers review comparison videos and benchmark charts before selecting “buy”.

RTX 50 series builds momentum across the range

While the RTX 5070 is the standout model, the rest of the RTX 50 range is also gaining momentum on Steam. With around 1.62% share, the RTX 5060 has become the second most common 50-series GPU among users. The RTX 5060 Ti follows closely behind at approximately 1.20%.

Together, RTX 50‑series cards now form a real presence in the Steam survey, not just a niche for hardware enthusiasts.

Together, the RTX 5060, 5060 Ti and 5070 span a wide part of the market: value-conscious 1080p gamers, mixed 1080p/1440p systems, and more ambitious PCs aimed at high-refresh-rate 1440p monitors. Holiday discounts and bundle offers will probably raise those figures further as users upgrade during sales periods.

Nvidia remains dominant on Steam, but the market is changing

Despite stronger GPU competition than in earlier years, the Steam Hardware Survey still places Nvidia well ahead of its rivals. The current split is approximately:

  • Nvidia: about 73.8% of all GPUs on Steam.
  • AMD: around 18.0%, maintaining a clear second place.
  • Intel: roughly 7.7%, driven chiefly by integrated graphics in laptops and entry-level desktops.

That dominance does not mean the market is static. AMD’s presence in the top 10 as a combined group demonstrates that Radeon cards continue to appeal to a committed audience, particularly those building value-led PCs. Intel’s gradual growth in discrete GPUs also points to possible future changes, especially in lower-cost pre-built systems.

VRAM trends: 8 GB remains widespread, while larger capacities grow

Steam’s data tracks more than the GPU installed in a PC; it also offers an indication of video-memory capacity. For years, 8 GB of VRAM has been the mid-range standard. That remains true, with roughly one-third of users - about 33.3% - using 8 GB GPUs.

The more notable development is above that level. GPUs with 12 GB and 16 GB of VRAM are becoming increasingly common, representing about 19.2% and 8.1% of systems respectively. Games featuring high-resolution textures, expansive open worlds and ray tracing can consume memory rapidly. For players considering future releases, 12 GB and 16 GB capacities are becoming ever more appealing.

The shift toward 12 GB and 16 GB VRAM suggests gamers no longer treat memory as a luxury feature, but as part of basic future planning.

The RTX 5070 directly benefits from this movement. Buyers increasingly assess not only raw frame rates, but also the VRAM available for forthcoming games that already specify 12 GB as a recommended requirement.

What the RTX 5070 means for a GPU upgrade

For Steam users considering a new graphics card in 2025 or early 2026, the RTX 5070’s success provides several practical indicators. A model that rises this quickly through the rankings will usually offer the appropriate combination of performance, price and features for a broad range of players.

Before deciding, most users should consider three straightforward points:

  • Monitor: 1080p, 1440p or 4K, and which refresh rate?
  • VRAM: 8 GB, 12 GB or more, based on the games you actually play.
  • Budget: only the GPU, or a broader platform upgrade including CPU and PSU?

For high-refresh-rate 1080p or conventional 1440p gaming, the RTX 5070 often occupies a comfortable middle ground. Less expensive cards can still be sufficient for esports games alone. For 4K gaming with intensive ray tracing, players may prefer a higher-tier model or need to moderate their expectations for settings.

Beyond Steam statistics: performance, risk and longevity

Steam’s survey measures adoption rather than outright speed, so it should be considered alongside other information when assessing an upgrade. Benchmarks, power use and cooling requirements remain important. The RTX 5070’s growth does not make it suitable for every PC; depending on the exact model, compact cases and older PSUs may have difficulty with its heat output or power draw.

There is also the familiar upgrade risk: purchasing late in a generation can be frustrating if a new architecture arrives sooner than anticipated. Many buyers seek to reduce that risk by choosing a card that appears regularly in rankings such as Steam’s. A popular GPU will often receive stronger long-term driver support, more refined game profiles and benefit from a more active second-hand market when it is eventually time to move on.

For now, Steam’s message is straightforward: among Nvidia’s newest generation of cards, the RTX 5070 has matched the way people actually build PCs and play games. It may not look like the most spectacular piece of silicon on paper, but in real gaming PCs it is the card doing the work - and increasingly taking the lead from the RTX 4070 it was designed to replace.
