PITCH: Building Europe’s Future from Northern Portugal

The creation of PITCH – Porto Innovation and Technology Hub is far more than a partnership involving the Polytechnic of Porto, the University of Porto and Porto City Council. It offers a practical response to one of Europe’s greatest current challenges: converting knowledge into competitiveness while safeguarding territorial cohesion.

PITCH and territorially inclusive competitiveness

In a recent article published in Global Challenges & Regional Science, Rodríguez-Pose and Bartalucci warn that future European policy may focus investment solely on regions that already lead in innovation. Such an approach would widen regional inequalities and leave a substantial share of Europe’s economic potential untapped. The authors argue that Europe should not have to choose between competitiveness and cohesion; instead, it must develop competitiveness that is territorially inclusive.

It is within this framework that PITCH takes on particular importance.

Porto and the wider Northern region hold some of Portugal’s and Europe’s most valuable assets: outstanding universities, internationally recognised research centres, a business base with a strong export focus, and considerable entrepreneurial capacity. The task is to turn these strengths into a competitive advantage on a global scale.

Porto Innovation and Technology Hub as a collaborative platform

PITCH has been established to meet that task. Beyond its physical presence, it seeks to build a collaborative platform bringing together science, technology, businesses and public administration. By linking research more closely to the needs of the economy, it will create fresh opportunities for innovation.

It also shows that European development cannot rely solely on major capitals, where leading investments are frequently concentrated. Unlocking the potential of territories is essential to strengthening the competitiveness of the European Union.

PITCH therefore embodies a contemporary approach to territorial development: knowledge, when shared and put to work for businesses and people, is the foremost driver of competitiveness. Europe’s future is also being built in Northern Portugal.
