Behind the endless scrolling, however, scientists believe a subtler change may be taking place in the brain.
Researchers are increasingly examining links between intensive smartphone use and shifts in brain structure, mood instability and difficulties with attention. What was once dismissed as moral panic is beginning to resemble a neurological pattern that can be measured.
How a pocket screen hijacks attention
The modern smartphone is powered by microstimuli: notifications, short-form videos, chat bubbles, work alerts and news banners. Each demands a small fragment of attention; collectively, they set the mind’s rhythm throughout the day.
For many, a phone is the first thing they pick up each morning and the final thing they check before sleep. Reaching for it so often creates an expectation loop: the brain begins anticipating a reward with every tap, while boredom can become almost unbearable.
The brain treats smartphone notifications as mini reward signals, training us to seek the next ping before we even think about it.
During the Covid-19 pandemic, the World Health Organization recorded a 25% worldwide increase in anxiety and depressive disorders. This rise coincided with sharply higher screen time, remote working and dependence on digital platforms for essential social contact. Scientists are now investigating whether that period reinforced problematic habits, particularly among adolescents whose social lives were largely formed through a handset.
Within only a few years, “brain rot” went from being an ironic TikTok caption to an expression in mainstream use. Teenagers originally used it to joke about the foggy sensation that followed hours of unthinking content consumption. Oxford linguists even named it their word of the year in 2024, signalling a broad suspicion that digital routines may influence the clarity of our thinking.
Inside the brain: what scans are starting to show
Beyond online jokes, brain-imaging research offers more tangible indications. In Heidelberg, Germany, a research team used MRI scans to study young adults displaying signs of smartphone addiction. They found lower grey-matter volume in several areas, including the insula and parahippocampal cortex, regions involved in memory, emotional awareness and self-control.
The results mirror patterns associated with behavioural addictions, including gambling. However, most research in this area uses small samples and cross-sectional methods, providing a single snapshot rather than a full history. As a result, scientists cannot yet state definitively whether intensive smartphone use produces these changes, or whether people with susceptible brains simply use phones more heavily.

A 2023 meta-analysis, published in the journal Psychoradiology and led by researcher Christian Montag, combined 26 MRI studies. Across the pooled evidence, differences repeatedly appeared in two networks among heavy or problematic users:

- Reward-processing circuits, which react to likes, messages and novelty with brief surges of pleasure.

When does heavy smartphone use turn into addiction?
It remains difficult to define “excessive” smartphone use. A surgeon reviewing medical results and a teenager watching short videos for six hours may both report substantial screen time, yet the effects on their lives and brains may be very different.
Psychologists generally do not diagnose “addiction” from the number of hours alone. Instead, they assess patterns resembling gambling or substance-related disorders. Several research teams have proposed criteria for what they term problematic smartphone use.

In one study of adolescents with internet addiction, lead author Max Chang identified greater spontaneous activity in particular brain areas alongside weaker connections in networks associated with decision-making. This combination may indicate a stronger pull towards immediate rewards and a reduced ability to consider long-term consequences.
Teen brains tuned to constant novelty may struggle more with slow tasks like reading, revision, or sustained conversation.
Clinicians are now concerned that this neural pattern may extend beyond phone use. A brain conditioned to seek rapid bursts of digital satisfaction could later face a greater risk of other addictions, ranging from gaming binges to substance use.
Emotional swings and “digital jitters”
Psychiatrists scanning heavy users describe a system under strain: attention shifts rapidly, emotional responses intensify and sleep routines alter. In television appearances and public presentations, doctors including American psychiatrist Brent Nelson describe patients who look at their phones dozens of times an hour, but still say they feel more distracted and less content.
Nervous systems continually exposed to this churn may respond too strongly to minor irritations and find it harder to settle back to their baseline. Some younger patients report a form of digital jitters: anxiety, fear of missing out and a compulsion to refresh feeds even when nothing new has appeared.
Not all smartphone screen time is equal
Neuroscientist Parisa Gazerani and other specialists reject the simplistic claim that “screens are bad”. The brain is highly plastic, meaning it changes in response to repeated activities. Depending on what people do with their phones, that adaptability can either help or harm.
A number of studies identify benefits from particular forms of use. Language applications, music-production tools, creative video editing and structured learning platforms can improve memory, problem-solving and fine motor skills. Video calls can also maintain emotional connections for migrants, remote workers and isolated older people.
The risks do not come from the glass rectangle itself, but from a mix of design tricks, personal vulnerabilities, and the absence of off-screen alternatives.
Many researchers now support a more detailed understanding of screen time, categorised by its purpose:

- Interactive social use: messaging friends, group calls and meaningful exchanges.
- Passive consumption: endless scrolling, autoplay feeds and background-noise videos.
Passive consumption, particularly when it happens late at night or for extended periods, seems most closely associated with poor sleep, low mood and complaints about attention. Active use, if kept within healthy boundaries, may even protect against some negative effects by providing structure, feedback and a feeling of progress.
What researchers want to measure next
Neuroscientists are calling for major longitudinal studies that follow people’s brains and habits over many years. They want objective information taken from the phones themselves, including timestamps, app types and intensity of use. This could finally distinguish between someone spending three hours each day writing essays in a note-taking application and someone spending the same three hours doomscrolling short videos.
Several research groups are also trialling interventions. Volunteers may be asked to silence notifications for a week, turn screens to greyscale, create specific social-media time windows or leave phones outside the bedroom. Within days, many participants describe better sleep, fewer mood swings and slightly calmer mental “background noise”.

As the science continues to develop, individuals can carry out low-risk experiments of their own. Straightforward adjustments can reveal how responsive the mind has become to digital signals:
- Disable non-essential notifications for seven days and record any difference in concentration.
- Leave the phone in a different room during meals or periods of focused work.
- Use an ordinary alarm clock and charge the phone outside the bedroom.
- Choose one brief daily period for “mindless scroll time” rather than making scattered checks.
These changes need neither costly applications nor extreme detox programmes. They work more like laboratory instruments, showing how rapidly attention can settle once the most forceful stimuli are reduced.
Where policy and design could shift
The debate now extends beyond individual self-discipline. Public health bodies are considering guidance on children’s screen use, comparable to earlier television recommendations. Schools are testing “phone-free classroom” rules, while some universities are piloting lockable pouches during lectures and examinations.
Within the industry, designers and engineers occupy a difficult position. Many platforms depend on business models driven by engagement, but they face mounting pressure to create more tranquil experiences: quiet modes enabled by default, barriers to endless scrolling, bedtime reminders and screen-time dashboards that everyday users can genuinely understand.
Over the coming decade, increasingly precise brain data will inform these discussions. The key issue will be not only how long people spend on their phones, but also how that time shapes attention, memory and emotional balance over a lifetime.
